Cathedral of St. James is a masterpiece of Christian art in Sibenik. It was built in the 15th century. The
cathedral is part of the UNESCO protected heritage.
It is famous not only in Croatia tourism but also in European architecture, since it is entirely made of stone.
It was conceived and constructed as a three-nave basilica with a dome.
The construction of the cathedral started at the beginning of the 15th century, and it was completed 100 years later.
Reasons for such a long construction time were frequent wars and lack of money.
Numerous architects participated in the process.
The first of them were Italian architects Francesco di Giacomo and Antonio Bussato. They built lateral walls and gates.
After them, Juraj Dalmatinac took over the main role in the construction. He completed the shrine, and he carved 74 people's heads in stone on the outside walls.
These people are still unknown today, and it is supposed to be people of that time from different strata of society.
This work of art is considered a top architectural achievement.
Even if you are not really an expert in art and architecture, you will enjoy your visit to the Cathedral.
It is interesting to note that one episode of Season 5 of the famous Game of Thrones series took place just near the cathedral.
