Beautiful island Pag
Beautiful island Pag

The first of Croatian islands I decided to visit was Pag. It's famous for its beaches, cheese, lamb meat and production of salt.
My visit took place on April 6, 2019.

How did I arrive in Pag

Pag is connected to the mainland via the bridge called "Paški" bridge, so I could easily reach it by car.
My starting destination was, as usual, Split. I decided to take A1 highway from Dugopolje instead of sea road D8 because it would take me one more hour to arrive in Pag.
The trip was very comfortable and traffic signs were correctly guiding me all the way to my destination.
I left A1 highway at exit called Posedarje. From there it took me 40 minutes to arrive in the city of Pag, which was my first destination.
Roads on the island were surprisingly good. There was nothing to complain about traffic conditions during the whole trip.
I decided to visit two most prominent places on island Pag: Pag city and Novalja. But for sure there are other smaller interesting places on the island, which I may visit next time.

Pag city

Pag city is similar to other coastal places in Croatia. There is a nice promenade near the sea, and a few interesting sacral objects in the city centre.
What really impressed me was a beautiful beach located in the city centre. I believe it will be even more beautiful during the summer season when the city takes more care about its appearance.

The most prominent sacral object in the Pag city is the Church of St. Mary's assumption, located at the main city square. It is a beautiful gothic three-nave basilica.
Church's lunette displays a sculpture of Blessed Virgin, with her hands protecting people.

Pag is one of the typical coastal cities which lives to the fullest during the summer season. That's why during my visit there were no many people out there, despite the fact that the weather was perfect.
I perceived the city as a little bit messy with a few objects in a need for reconstruction. Unfortunately, it's same for many small Dalmatian coast cites outside the summer season. These places are undeveloped. The main reason for that is the lack of people, especially young ones.
Many people leave the Dalmatian coast in search of better living conditions and come back only for vacation. Mostly those who own a house stay there permanently, especially if they can live from tourism.

Trip to Novalja

My next destination was Novalja, another Pag's coastal city. It took me around half an hour and 30 kilometres to arrive there from Pag city. The trip was comfortable and the road was good.
During my trip to Novalja, I noticed the athletes participating in the race called "the first Pag trail". I could also notice many bike trails alongside the whole island. Pag is great for recreative bikers and runners.
Another interesting thing I noticed was a lamb near the street. Pag is known for the best lamb meat in Croatia.
Just near the entrance to the Novalja, I noticed a beach complex few kilometres long. The beaches were still closed.
The first and most famous beach in Novalja, Zrće, was also closed, and no one was there except the excavators which were preparing the beach for the summer season.
I left my car in the centre of Novalja and took a walk around the city.

Novalja city

Novalja gave me the impression of a small and clean place. I also perceived it as quiet, but during the summer season with so many visitors, I guess it's not quiet at all.
The sea was perfectly clean even near the centre of the city, which is pretty rare. The houses by the sea were nicely decorated, and the beaches were clean, although the summer hasn't yet arrived.

The most interesting building in the city is the church of St. Catherine.

Conclusion

I liked Pag a lot, especially Novalja. Preserved nature, clean sea and great roads left a good impression on me. And the beaches are excellent. I will come there again this summer and enjoy the atmosphere on some of Novalja beaches.
