UPDATE April 2, 2020
There are 48 new cases of infection of coronavirus in Croatia in the last 24 hours. The number is 50% less than yesterday, which indicates Croatia is handling the epidemy well. Minister of health Vili Beros is satisfied with the situation. He pointed out that good results are a consequence of compliance of measures by Croatian citizens. However, he pointed out that some people in Split, Sibenik, and Zadar are not respecting these restrictions.
Just like most countries in the world, Croatian borders are fully closed for all forms of transportation except for food and other essential goods. All schools, public events, bars, restaurants, and other service activities are suspended until April 19, 2020.
It is difficult for now to predict the success of the 2020 Croatian tourist season. Over the next few weeks, we will find out the Croatian government's strategy for liberalizing movement and opening up state borders.
The current strategy of significant restriction of movement and suspension of most activities has yielded results, and the number of patients in Croatia could start to decline during the next days and weeks.
Croatia could face the challenge of choosing between economic activities and maintaining health. The liberalization of movement and opening borders could result in the increased income generated by tourism, while it may introduce the risk of a new wave of infection.
Tourism has been the most significant branch of the economy in Croatia for the last 20 years. The absence of a tourist season could jeopardize the Croatian economy that relies so heavily on it. That means Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenkovic and his government will have a quite difficult job in the next few months handling situation with the virus and economy.
UPDATE April 1 ,2020
There are 96 new infections in the last 24 hours. This is the highest number recorded so far in Croatia. Still, minister of health Beros is satisfied with the situation, considering the fact it's not exponential increase.
